Description
Directs the operational function in medical affairs to achieve organizational objectives. Responsible for the design, development and implementation of programs related to educational, promotional and reporting materials for products related to Phase IIIb, Phase IV trials, solicited and non-solicited studies, publications, and so on. At this level, the position has a greater degree of impact on the business results and typically, responsibility for managing a group of professionals.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Medical Affairs Director, Orthopaedics to join our Scientific Excellence, Health Economics Market Access and Commercial & Professional Education (SHAPE) team in Canada. This role will be instrumental in driving the strategic medical affairs activities for our orthopaedic products portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess a robust scientific background along with a deep understanding of the orthopaedic market and will be responsible for bridging clinical data and market needs to enhance patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the strategic medical affairs plan for orthopaedic products, aligning with corporate objectives and regulatory guidelines.
- Collaborate with research and development teams to inform clinical trial designs and ensure alignment with market access needs.
- Provide scientific expertise including critical analyses of scientific data, performing literature reviews, and developing high-quality, compliant scientific materials to support product launches (e.g. approvals, claims development, product adoption) and lifecycle management.
- Build and nurture relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals, and academic institutions to facilitate research collaborations and clinical education.
- Oversee the generation of substantiated clinical and economic evidence to support market access efforts, working closely with cross-functional teams, including the Health Economics and Market Access (HEMA) team.
- Lead the preparation and presentation of clinical data to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clarity and strategic messaging.
- Where required, develop scientific content for medical education programs and resources for healthcare professionals to promote understanding of product benefits and appropriate use.
- Monitor industry trends, competitive landscape, and emerging scientific evidence to inform unmet medical needs, strategies and initiatives.
Direct Reports:
Manage and mentor the Health Economics and Market Access (HEMA) Manager, ensuring effective execution of market access strategies and economic evaluations related to orthopaedic products.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a relevant field (PhD, MD, PharmD) preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in medical affairs within the medical device or pharmaceutical industry; specific experience in orthopaedics an asset
- Strong knowledge of clinical research, regulatory requirements, health economics, market access processes, procurement and payer dynamics in Canada.
- Proven track record of managing cross-functional teams and projects effectively.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to a diverse audience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and translate it into actionable strategies.
- Ability to travel 25% combined domestically and internationally as required for meetings, conferences, and KOL engagements.
- Required Years of People Management Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years
