In partnership with the Government of Prince Edward Island, Medavie Health Services operates PEI’s Mobile Mental Health Service that provides a community-focused response to Islanders experiencing mental health concerns. These services are offered both over the phone and in person visits.
As part of the Mobile Mental Health Team, operated by Medavie Health Services, this position responds to individuals in crisis requiring de-escalation, mental health and risk assessments, and coordination of care and supports in the community. The Registered Nurse works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary service providers such as, but not limited to, Community Mental Health and Addictions, Primary Care, Psychiatry, EMS, justice, victims’ services, child and family services, and police services.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Respond to crisis calls across the province with Mobile Mental Health Team members
- De-escalate situations; to elicit facts from client; to observe behaviors; and to make an independent judgment as to what steps should be made to gather collateral information from other sources
- Possesses in depth knowledge of suicidal and self-destructive behaviors as well as homicidal and aggressive behaviors,
- Accurately assesses client’s condition and presenting problem, and contributing factors, taking into consideration the environment, individual, family, and social context
- Conducts mental health and risk assessments to facilitate case formulation; treatment planning; make recommendations; and provide mental health and addictions treatment incorporating client, family and other professionals’ information
- Utilizes and applies extensive knowledge of principles of prevention, case management, psycho social rehabilitation, and applying best and emerging modes of therapy such as brief, narrative, cognitive, behavioural, supportive, family and group therapy, discern which approaches are best suited to the situation, clinical needs and range of conditions/ illnesses
- Collaborates and shares information with law enforcement and/or EMS
- Recommends and facilitates referrals to appropriate alternative resources as indicated, including appropriate location for service delivery
- Employs a technical knowledge of psychotropic medication, including expected outcomes and the ability to identify a need for further evaluation or consultation with physician/psychiatry
- Gathers information from interviews with the client as well as collateral information from family and other professionals involved (e.g., physicians, continuing care facilities, supported housing, community partners, caregivers, etc.) where appropriate
- Uses substantive knowledge of numerous areas including but not limited to, mental illness, cognitive functioning, medical co-morbidity, and substance abuse to formulate clinical impressions and recommendations
- Ensures that evidence-based practices are embedded into client care
- Requires independent critical thinking, clinical judgment and independent decision-making skills required to develop, implement and monitor care plans; and other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree or diploma in nursing and currently enrolled/planning to enroll in BN program with extensive clinical experience, preferably involving assessment of and exposure to acute as well as chronic and persistent mental illness; treatment and/or case management of clients with mental illness; work with clients of varied ages and levels of intellect; exposure to addictions related issues, and experience working in varied mental health settings as well as in the community.
- Active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island;
- Demonstrated ability to provide initial psychological interviews and assessments
- Experience on interdisciplinary teams, in program development and extensive case management.
- Must have the ability to work effectively as a reliable member of a team; to work independently with minimal supervision; and to adapt to a changing, evolving environment.
- Knowledge of the DSM-5, Mental Health Act, Criminal Code Review Board and crisis intervention in a mental health setting is required.
- Must have a valid Driver’s license or willing to obtain
- Applicants must have a good previous work attendance record.
Other Qualifications:
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training is considered an asset
- Suicide risk assessment training is considered an asset
- Violence risk assessment training is considered an asset
- Canadian Nurses Association certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing is considered an asset or will be required to obtain within 2 years.
- Knowledge of computer programs (GroupWise, WordPerfect, ISM, etc.) is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in both French and English would be an asset.
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
Salary range is $37.61 - $46.98 per hour.
