YORK CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD  Invites applications for the position of: Orientation and Mobility Specialist (1) Permanent Part-Time Position (0.5 FTE) OSSTF-PSSP 1 - $25,157.50 to $38,725 per annum    Position Summary:  Under the direction of the Special Programs Teacher - Vision, the Orientation and Mobility Instructor provides direct services to students with visual impairment in the planning and implementation of an individualized program that fosters the students independence.  Major Responsibilities: Perform orientation and mobility assessments that focus on long and short term goals of students who are blind or have low vision.  Contribute to the students Individual Education Plan (IEP), the goals, teaching strategies and evaluation to be used during orientation and mobility instruction.  Develop sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the students assessed needs, IEP goals and objectives, functioning level, and motivation level.  Teach students skills of assertiveness and self-advocacy related to orientation and mobility as well as concept development, spatial and sensory awareness and pre-cane skills and cane techniques ensuring the students safety at all times.  Evaluate the students ongoing progress and prepare reports based on the students level of service and consult with board staff regarding accessibility needs of students who are blind or have low vision.  Support students transitioning into school, between elementary and secondary schools as well as activities outside school, such as co-op /work placements, post-secondary institutions and workplace.  Prepare and use equipment and materials such as tactile maps, models, distance low vision devices, assistive technology devices, and white canes for the development of orientation and mobility skills.   Liaise with parents to enhance the orientation and mobility techniques at home as well as various outside agencies in the students community.  Participate in meetings of the vision resources services team and at schools regarding student progress as required.  Train vision resource teachers in sighted guide, and basic pre-cane skills and orientation inside of school buildings.  Other job related activities as requested by the supervisor. Qualifications and Experience: Orientation and Mobility post diploma certificate, Mohawk College (or equivalent). 3-5 years of experience working with children and adolescents as Orientation and Mobility Instructor. Skills and Competencies: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team Excellent organization and interpersonal skills Solid verbal and written communication skills Ability to travel by car within York Region Proficient using tactile maps, models, distance low vision devices, adaptive mobility devices, and long canes.
