F.H. Collins Secondary School is currently seeking a passionate educator to join our dynamic learning community. F.H.C is a dual-track English/French Immersion school serving approximately 780 students in grades 8 through 12. We provide students with a diverse range of academic, athletic performance, outdoor/experiential, trades, and arts programs. We are proud of our strong academic programming, cultural diversity, and commitment to meeting the needs of all learners.

Located in the capital city of Whitehorse, Yukon, F.H.C sits alongside the Yukon River on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council. Our school continuously works to honour First Nations ways of knowing, doing, and being, and we value our deep connections with families and the broader community.

The Indigenous Academy at F.H. Collins is a grade 10, full-day 1 semester credit-based program that integrates curriculum of various credit courses, primarily using First Nations ways of knowing, doing and being to deliver and learn the core knowledge and competencies; it requires extensive BC curriculum knowledge, and knowledge and experience working with First Nations' students. Currently the courses are Grade 10 Phys.Ed. / Outdoor Ed., Career Planning, English, Social Studies, Art / Leadership. Experience working with First Nation partners and organizations is required.

Please clearly demonstrate in your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent;
  • Recent experience teaching at secondary levels, particularly in a dynamic experiential way, using differentiated instruction, and formative and standards-based assessment
  • Demonstrated success integrating experiential learning
  • Strong understanding of BC curriculum; and hands-on learning methods to achieve competencies
  • Recent experience adapting, modifying and implementing curriculum to meet the unique learning needs of a diverse student population, particularly through project and inquiry-based learning
  • Training and recent experience in integrating First Nations Ways of knowing, doing and being, as well as experience and demonstrated success working with First Nations students

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY

  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of the First Nations people of Yukon and a culturally diverse student population;
  • Strong ability and experience integrating experiential learning activities into the curriculum
  • Strong classroom management, planning, motivational and organizational skills;
  • Strong understanding of the impact of past and current issues experienced by First Nations students.
  • Solid understanding of and demonstrated success with principles of Universal Design for Learning, and UBD (backward design)
  • Knowledge of the Calls to Action in Education by the Truth and Reconciliation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work positively and collaboratively with students, staff, stakeholder groups and the school community;
  • Experience and training related to students demonstrating developmental trauma/diversity and/or adverse childhood experiences
  • Ability to work as part of a larger school team to implement the goals of the school growth plan.
