The Cross Cancer Institute is Northern Alberta’s own tertiary cancer centre and a leader in innovative cancer research, prevention, treatment and care initiatives across the province and beyond. The Pharmacy at the Cross Cancer Institute is an integral component to the facility. The Pharmacy Assistant, under the direction of the Pharmacy Operations Manager and practicing within their full scope, is responsible for portering, maintaining hospital ward stock, assisting with the receiving, unpacking and distribution of drugs within the Pharmacy and packaging and distribution from the Pharmacy to outside areas. The Pharmacy Assistant duties and responsibilities include stocking medications/supplies in Pharmacy and in Nursing areas; Assists in receiving area with packaging of peripheral clinic orders and in the unpacking of purchase orders; Packaging mail/bus/courier orders; Portering; Narcotic management; Performs other duties as assigned by Pharmacy Operations Manager.

As a Pharmacy Assistant, you will be responsible for the packaging, distributing, shipping medications and the management and replenishment of medication inventory levels under the general supervision of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Previous pharmacy experience required. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a pharmacy assistant and/or technician in a clinical setting. Must have good organizational skills, able to work cooperatively with others, dependable, accurate, pleasant attitude towards public, good interpersonal skills. Ability to transfer medications with a great degree of accuracy therefore needs to be able to read and interpret generic and trade names of drugs. Fluency in the English language (written and verbal). Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Commitment to patient and family centered care.

Graduate of recognized pharmacy assistant program and/or recent retail or hospital pharmacy experience is preferred. Proficiency with Windows-based computer applications (Microsoft Word/Excel) is preferred.. Previous portering skills is an asset. Previous experience with Pyxis is an asset. Previous experience with Epic is an asset. Previous experience with barcoding medications is an asset.
