The Team:
The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) is a dedicated and knowledgeable team of 164 conservation officers stationed in 45 communities across the province. As experts in their field, they specialize in public safety related to human-wildlife conflict and manage complex investigations. In partnership with organizations such as the Ministry of Forests, the RCMP, and Environment Canada, the BCCOS is committed to reducing human-wildlife conflict and upholding their vision of being a progressive leader in environmental compliance and public safety. Learn more about our organization and how we protect BC’s natural resources at our COS page and by reviewing our recent video at https://tinyurl.com/mpsxcx5p.

This competition is intended to recruit both experienced law enforcement officers wanting to join the BCCOS, as well as qualified new recruits who will attend the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy 2025 delivery.

The Role:
As a Conservation Officer with the COS, you are entrusted with enforcing 33 federal and provincial statutes to protect the public and preserve peace across British Columbia. Holding Special Provincial Constable Status under the Police Act, you are on the frontline of environmental law enforcement, conducting a variety of investigations each year in collaboration with multiple agencies. This is a diverse and demanding role that offers the excitement of backcountry patrols, wildlife tracking, and environmental investigations, with each day presenting new and exciting challenges. Your work will have a direct impact on the safety and well-being of citizens and the environment as you safeguard BC’s natural resources.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Applied degree or technical diploma in a recognized post-secondary institution which offers a program in natural resource law enforcement.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Completion of the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy (WCLEA) or equivalent law enforcement academy.

Willingness Statements -- Applicants Must:

  • Hold a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
  • Have successfully completed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.
  • Have successfully completed the BC Conservation Outdoor Recreation and Education Course (CORE) or Provincial equivalent.
  • Have successfully completed and possess current Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent training.
  • Hold a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification.
  • Be fully operational and able to carry out the duties of an armed Conservation Officer.
