PK AST 09R - Student Ranger Crew Lead

The BC Parks Student Ranger Program (SRP) promotes outdoor youth employment opportunities across the province. For the 2025 operational season, the SRP will be hiring 54 students across the province (13 of these hires will be Crew Leads). Eligible applicants are between the ages of 18 and 30, that have been enrolled in full-time studies (secondary or post-secondary) within the last 6 months. Crew Lead applicants will be required to have a class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and demonstrate experience leading a group of 2 or more people to accomplish a project in a work, academic, community, Nation, or volunteer-based role. BC Parks encourages students from Indigenous backgrounds to apply for these positions.

The 13 Crew Lead locations for the 2025 season include: Victoria (Goldstream Provincial Park), Black Creek (Miracle Beach Provincial Park), North Vancouver, Squamish, Cranbrook, Penticton, Kamloops, Clearwater (Wells Gray Provincial Park - Trail specific position), Williams Lake, Prince George, Fort St John, Smithers, and Terrace.

Note: Due to recall rights of 2024 Crew Leads, not all thirteen (13) positions will be available in the 2025 season. An eligibility list may be made for the thirteen (13) locations. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply on all locations they would like to be considered for.

What to expect:

Being a Student Ranger is a great opportunity to work outside for the summer, learn new skills, meet new people and be engaged in rewarding work. The SRP provides youth with an opportunity to live and work in beautiful places of British Columbia.

Most crews will be structured with 1 Crew Lead and 3 Crew Members. However, the Mt. Robson and Tofino crews will operate with only 2 Crew Members, and no Crew Lead. The Wells Gray Trail Crew will operate with one Trail Crew Lead and one Trail Crew Member. Each regional crew will work within their respective region on various BC Parks related projects. The Crew Lead work term begins April 28th, 2025, and ends August 30th, 2025. All successful applicants will be expected to attend a mandatory provincial program training event from May 11th-May 16th, 2025. Details on the training program will be provided upon employment offer.

Crew Leads will begin their positions 2 weeks prior to Crew Members at their designated office location and end 1 week after. This time will be for Crew Leads to familiarize themselves with their direct Supervisor and other BC Parks staff, regional BC Park and Protected Areas and assist with the project planning phase. During the season, Crew Leads will act as the main point of contact between the crew and other BC Parks staff involved in project work. Crew Leads will also be responsible for program deliverables (ex. Monthly reporting, a final season report, and tracking crew inventory).

The job can be physically challenging at times, but teamwork can be extremely rewarding. Crew Leads and Crew Members can expect to be out in the field nearly all working days, participating in various projects in the areas of Conservation, Recreation, Indigenous Relations and/or Public Outreach.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

BC Parks has the following criteria for those interested in becoming Student Ranger Crew Leads for the 2025 season:

• Enrolled in full-time studies at an accredited secondary or post-secondary institution within the past 6 months.
• Experience leading a group of 2 or more to complete a project or task during an academic, work, community, Nation or volunteer experience. Preference may be given to candidates who have experience leading projects or tasks outdoors and/or involve a component of safety planning.
• Between 18 - 30 years of age.
• Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
• Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
• This position requires you to have a valid FULL BC driver’s license (minimum class 5), or an equivalent class driver's license from another province or jurisdiction.
• Must attend Program Training May 11th-16th, 2025. Details re. training will be provided at the offer of employment.
• Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act [CRRA] check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry.

JOB PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to candidates with valid Intermediate First Aid and/or Transport Endorsement certificates.
