Substitute Grounds Service Worker

Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities. The district enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3000 dedicated staff.

This position performs a variety of physical tasks and works with and in support of the other trade groups. The incumbent operates a variety of tools and equipment used in the maintenance of District grounds and facilities. This position is under the supervision of the Manager, Structural, Grounds and Fleet but work is performed with instructions received from the Grounds Foreperson as required. Successful candidates are hired on-call and given the opportunity to remain on-call or work part-time or full-time hours by applying to internal vacancies

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(This is not an exhaustive list of the duties to be performed.)

Performs manual labour such as moving furniture and equipment, removing wall carpeting and floor tiles, shovelling snow, digging ditches, mixing and laying concrete and doing low risk asbestos removal.

Maintains, repairs and installs landscaping around District facilities, such as planting, weeding, grass cutting, pruning, storm drainage and general clean up.

Maintains, repairs and installs areas such as pathways, play areas, parking lots, portables, hockey rinks, storm drains and playgrounds.

Inspects, maintains and repairs Adventure Playgrounds. Installs, repairs and maintains other playground equipment such as goal posts, freestanding basketball hoops and tetherball posts.

Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, jackhammer, lawnmower, and various hand and power tools.

Inspects vehicles and equipment used for safe operation and reports defects to the supervisor as per District procedures. Performs minor maintenance such as keeping it clean and adding operating fluids as required.

May work with or perform duties of Delivery Driver or District Courier as assigned.

Performs duties according to District and Government health and safety procedures and regulations that relate to the work performed to minimize the potential for accidents, injuries or hazards.

Performs other job related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, abilities and skills)

Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.

2 years' landscaping experience.

Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving heavy objects, performing manual labour for prolonged periods of time and working in a variety of work locations and weather conditions.

Good mechanical aptitude.

Knowledge of the correct method of tree planting, pruning and general gardening practices.

Good problem solving.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Creative thinking in fabricating parts or tools.

Good interpersonal skills.

Good mechanical aptitude.

Valid class 5 BC Driver's License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Playground Inspectors certificate.

Chainsaw operator certificate.

Scissor lift and elevated platform certificate.

Fall protection awareness course.

This position is in the bargaining unit, with an hourly rate of pay of $31.12 which includes a percentage in lieu of vacation pay.
