Job Summary

The Team
The Landscape Wildfire Risk Assessment Unit within the Strategic Wildfire Resiliency Planning Section is an emerging team at BC Wildfire Service. Composed of three dedicated members, this team works collaboratively with a wide range of experts and interested parties to inform critical decision-making regarding landscape wildfire risk assessment and management. We value the diverse backgrounds, experience, and curiosity of our team members, who are encouraged to explore issues from multiple perspectives and engage internal and external expertise to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges.

The Role
As a Landscape Wildfire Risk Officer, you will provide senior-level expertise in landscape wildfire risk assessment and fire science, playing a critical role in developing innovative solutions for existing and novel problems related to wildfire resiliency. This position allows you to develop approaches and inform key decisions pertaining to landscape wildfire risk assessment and management, drawing on your experience and the latest research to advance risk-informed, evidence-based planning and policy development. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management, natural hazards or disaster/emergency management, plus 2 years recent related experience; OR
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, natural hazards or disaster/emergency management, plus 4 years recent related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and education may be considered; AND
  • Experience working on land and resource management issues; AND
  • Experience developing complex assessments and communicating outcomes to diverse end-user audiences; AND
  • Experience in program development and management ; AND
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.


Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Experience in landscape wildfire risk assessment.
  • Experience interpreting and applying wildfire science, including fire effects, to inform decision making.
  • Experience using data science software for data manipulation, statistical analysis, and visualization.
  • Experience using geographic information systems.
  • Experience in program development and management.
  • Supervisory experience.

  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat, and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for position to meet operational requirements.
  • To participate in ICS positions as assigned.
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).

About this Position:

This position can be based in any Ministry of Forests, BC Wildfire office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
