BMO Financial Group is seeking a full-time lawyer to join the legal team in Toronto as Senior Legal Counsel responsible for providing legal support, with a focus on derivatives, to BMO Global Asset Management’s (BMO GAM) manufacturing of retail and institutional investment products, including the BMO Mutual Funds, BMO Exchange Traded Funds, BMO AM Pooled Funds and alternative products.

You will deliver expert and experienced legal support to BMO GAM’s Canadian business, operations and corporate affairs, with a focus on:

  • Acting as a subject matter expert on relevant laws, regulations and policies relating to listed and OTC derivatives, including options, forward contracts, futures, swaps and other derivatives instruments

  • Drafting and negotiating derivatives documentation, including ISDAs, credit support annexes, account control agreements, broker agreements, onboarding documents and ancillary documentation

  • Derivatives transactional support, with a focus on equity and interest rate derivatives, including drafting and reviewing ISDA trade confirmations

  • Advising on a wide array of existing and new derivatives laws and regulatory initiatives, including trade reporting, margin requirements and compliance with National Instrument 81-102 Investment Funds

  • Providing legal and regulatory advice on new and existing investment products, initiatives, strategies, policies and developments

  • Identifying risks and implementing appropriate actions to mitigate them

  • Implementing areas of improvement to ensure consistency with industry practice when dealing with counterparties

  • Building effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders

  • Instructing and managing external legal counsel

  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed

This position will not be responsible for litigation matters.

Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Minimum requirements are a degree in law (LLB/JD) and license to practice law in Canada

  • 5+ years post Call to the Bar expertise in private practice, in-house experience or experience at a regulatory body

  • Knowledge of the business and regulatory environment in which BMO Financial Group operates

    Salary:

    $109,200.00 - $202,800.00

    The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

    Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
