The Opportunity

The Engineering Lead, Database is a senior technical role responsible for supporting the introduction and management of database technologies. In this role, the Lead will develop database infrastructure strategy, plans, designs and continuous improvement initiatives, and alongside service providers lead all aspects of implementation.

A key responsibility for the Lead will be gathering and translating technical requirements into infrastructure solution designs, developing and optimizing database infrastructure services in a hybrid environment, leveraging infrastructure-as-code to build database services, manage capacity, usage, performance and availability.

This role is additionally responsible for relationship management with key vendors and internal partners, managing services, processes and important metrics related to system design efficiency, requirements traceability, customer and partner satisfaction, system design quality and system availability to take proactive actions and deliver expected levels of system capability.

Who you’ll work with

Working under the direction of the Sr. Manager, Database Engineering, the Engineering Lead will mentor and coach other technical staff and our managed services staff. You will partner with architects, application developers, QA, product teams and internal technology groups to provide end to end technical oversight for project solutions.

What you’ll do

  • Apply your existing knowledge of database technologies to deploy, optimize and manage database infrastructure services

  • Analyze existing database ecosystems to ensure they are effectively meeting the needs of the organization.

  • Coordinate with all areas of the organization to see that the database technology stack is performing optimally. They will also analyze business requirements to identify where they can integrate new compute, storage, operating systems and data platform solutions.

  • Perform market research and evaluations including Proof of Concepts (POC) of new technologies and may recommend alternative data platforms or improvements.

  • Develop and detail the proposed technical design for the integration and implementation of any new system/service and will work with service providers / teams to ensure accurate understanding of the IT system design(s).

  • Defines TI Standards and Strategies, including configurations and settings (hardening, security, logging, backup/recovery, patching and platform standard methodologies).

  • Responsible for artifact management relating to design standards, templates, patterns, reference architectures and other design documentation standards.

  • Participate in evaluating the success of the project, identifying best practices and lessons learned and provide feedback to leadership and incorporates this information into future integration plans.

  • Developing and documenting standard operating procedures, improvements to design, build, configuration or operational functions based on measurement of reliability or efficiency of the service.

  • Management of technology licenses, asset management, prioritizing and assigning work to vendor staff, and the evaluation of OTPP and vendor operations performance.

What you’ll need

  • Minimum of 10 years in IT

  • Expert level knowledge of database internals with one or more of SQL Server, Azure SQL, Snowflake, Oracle, PostgreSQL

  • Minimum 5 years implementing, managing, and supporting cloud (Azure) and hybrid data platforms

  • Minimum 5 years designing, developing and implementing automations to deploy databases and to manage day-to-day operational activities

  • Experience with DevOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Spacelift are definite assets

  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities

  • Experience planning and implementing large-scale data migrations

  • Knowledge of Enterprise Infrastructure Services including Compute, Network & Storage ecosystems are assets

  • Demonstrated ability to generate and maintain technical documentation

  • Experience in contributing to a complete Project Life Cycle process including but not limited to project Request-Discovery-Planning-Delivery and Closure landmarks

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent

  • ITIL Foundations and TOGAF certification are assets
