Manager, Taxation

The Opportunity

The Manager, Taxation will focus primarily on the tax obligations of OTPP and its subsidiaries, in relation to investments and operations. Such tax obligations have a significant financial impact on the organization. Identification and management of tax obligations and risk provide value-added support to the Investment Division.


Who you'll work with

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Enterprise Taxation, the Manager, Taxation will play an integral role in managing global tax compliance for the pension plan. You will support the preparation and be accountable for the review and submission of the income tax, sales tax, and transfer pricing reporting for OTPP and subsidiaries (including foreign investment structures and foreign office operations). This involves domestic and international filings all across the world. You may also assist with providing advisory support to the People & Culture group with issues ranging from personal/payroll tax to permanent establishment risks.

What you'll do

Compliance and reporting

  • Independently support the delivery of compliance services from third party tax compliance providers

  • Providing insight to external tax advisors engaged to prepare the returns

  • Support the preparation of internally managed tax returns

  • Interact with internal stakeholders to manage the tax payment and tax refund processes.

  • Assist in the preparation and review of tax provisions

  • Assisting with day-to-day department reporting to the Chief Legal Officer

  • Monitoring and support controlling department costs

  • Support in the management of CRS/FATCA reporting

  • Assisting with management of relationships with external advisors

  • Manage withholding tax reclaims with the custodian and external advisors

  • Identify tax filing alternatives, tax risks and process enhancements where applicable.

Global Mobility

  • Tax Support as it relates to international office operations and global mobility:

  • Help maintain OTPP’s institutional tax knowledge as it relates to permanent establishments, corporate tax residency, transfer pricing, tax filing requirements, etc. associated with OTPP’s international footprint.

  • Ensuring enterprise-wide compliance with internal corporate tax policies

Corporate Projects

  • Assist in special enterprise projects and/or initiatives as needed.

Risk Management

  • Stay abreast of developments in investment-related tax laws and regimes in relevant jurisdictions around the world with a focus on compliance.

  • Support the impact assessment of investment-related tax laws, with a focus on areas that impact tax compliance.

  • Identify tax risks and opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the tax compliance process and provide the recommendations to Senior Manager and Tax team.

  • Be a trusted member of the tax team to advise on compliance issues and manage operational elements integral to investment structures.

  • Assisting in maintaining the Tax Risk Framework established by the Department.

  • Assisting management in monitoring internal controls over tax risk.

  • Assist with reviews, audits, disputes, and assessments initiated and performed by the CRA and other tax authorities, domestic and foreign. Collaborate with impacted teams, as appropriate.

  • Responsible for maintaining reporting tools and templates.

Tax Department Processes

  • Identifying and executing on opportunities to improve processes and controls, and building internal scalability.

  • Continuously improve the effectiveness and/or efficiency including evolving the use of technology and data.

  • Develop process improvements to expedite filings, minimize errors and manage risk within the regular reporting process.

What you'll need
  • Chartered Professional Accountant or equivalent relevant designation

  • Requires an individual with 5 or more years of experience in tax compliance

  • Completion of Level 1 and 2 of the CICA In-Depth program an asset

  • Good priority setting and time management skills in order co-ordinate the work of others to meet deadlines and quality standards

  • Requires an understanding of Canadian taxation, and a basic understanding of international taxation (i.e. treaty interpretation) and foreign domestic legislation

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to think through problems, assess a variety of factors and recommend a solution

  • Understand the tax implications of private asset investing including the withholding tax implications, cash repatriation strategies, exit tax implications on disposition of private assets, etc

  • Good background skills and knowledge of accounting and reconciliation processes

  • Must be able to work to deadlines, adapt to a rapidly changing environment and sustain high productivity levels

  • Must be extremely detail oriented, organized and thorough

  • Self-starter, confident, innovative, team player

  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders across the globe and ability to manage outside tax advisors

  • Must be able to effectively deal with internal and external clients and suppliers

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
