Job Description:

The Accommodation Specialist provides expertise and guidance in relation to a wide range of workplace accommodations and return-to-work requests. This role will support Employees, People Leaders, and HR Business Partners to promote Employee well-being while successfully implementing both stay-at-work and return-to-work and accommodation plans.

The Accommodation Specialist effectively supports all stakeholders through strong communication, collaboration, and expertise to ensure an optimal employee experience. This role will leverage knowledge of disability insurance, accommodation best practices, and legislative requirements.

This is a hybrid role that could be based in Sun Life’s Toronto, Montreal or Waterloo office but may be required to travel to other locations occasionally.

Bilingualism (French/English) is required.

What will you do?

  • Responsible for the initial triage of all accommodation requests and distribution to the relevant team i.e., Employee Relations for legal accommodations, HR Shared Services for disability forms etc.

  • Responsible for the management of medical accommodations, escalating complex claims as needed and/or requesting consultation support for expert advice

  • Ensure appropriate supports are in place, identify barriers to stay at work and returning to work (including medical and non-medical factors) and apply the correct intervention to support recovery as early and safe as possible

  • Lead management of case for both stay at work and return to work process’; provide direction and communicate effectively with key stakeholders; work in collaboration with Employees, People Leaders, HR Shared Services, Disability, HR Business Partners, and Employee Relations to provide ongoing support and build positive relationships

  • Develop and maintain outcome-focused case management plans that appropriately balance business needs against individual Employee needs/concerns

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation

  • Provides best-in-class support ensuring Employees are aware of and know how to access Sun Life tools and resources that support their well-being

  • Ensures a seamless transition from stay-at-work accommodation to disability if appropriate, and from disability to return-to-work, optimizing the employee experience by supporting navigation across complex programs

  • Assists in review of Ergonomic and/or Cognitive assessment requests

  • Engage third-party service providers and/or specialists to obtain assessments, information, and equipment where necessary

  • Contribute to the development, implementation and communication of new accommodation policies and processes

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada and worldwide

  • Subject matter expertise in Disability Leave management or a related field (minimum 3 years)

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of Workplace Mental Health and Physical accommodations (minimum 3 years)

  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a health-related field, or related certification/designation

  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and industry best practices related to psychological and occupational health and safety

  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory requirements on workplace accommodations and related Human Resources policies and procedures

  • Drive innovation through an understanding of digital solutions for employee challenges while maintaining a people-centric approach

  • Demonstrated track record of developing and managing positive Client relationships and delivering high-quality support through

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    • A caring approach, being emotionally invested in the success of others

    • Creating value by going above and beyond to drive success

    • Collaborative and creative approaches to problem solving, and the

    • Ability to leverage a high degree of judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive information

  • Ability to work well independently with multiple tasks and priorities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Access, Excel & Power Point)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
