About the role

The Corporate Treasury team has responsibility for the group treasury function at Sun Life.

Reporting to the AVP, Treasury, the Director, Treasury Transformation is responsible for overseeing and driving initiatives that enhance efficiency and innovation by leveraging technology. They have accountability for managing Treasury operations. This includes cash management and forecasting to ensure efficient deployment of operating cash to meet the daily liquidity needs of the North American business units, establishing controls, procedures and policies to safeguard cash and minimize the risk of fraud, accountability for operation the payment hub and the payment processing of North American banking transactions and management of US unclaimed assets to fulfil state filing obligations.

The Director will be responsible for working on a broad array of domestic and global corporate treasury initiatives and includes interaction with all the operations of Sun Life Financial globally.

The incumbent is expected to operate and work independently with the support of the AVP and take the lead to drive innovation and best practices with Treasury operations, manage relationships with BG’s, and externally with bank’s operations teams and technology vendors. The role has a significant focus on process automation including AI and RPA etc. to transform the execution of operational tasks.

This position will provide a unique opportunity to be involved in the development of a world-class treasury operation with a goal to improve treasury management and decision making within a consistent risk / return framework.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead digital transformation that enhances efficiency, innovation, automation within Treasury operations processes.
    • Develop the roadmap for operational transformation aligned with business goals
    • Identify key areas for improvement, such as process, systems or workflows
    • Oversee the integration of new technologies such as automation, AI and analytics tools into operations
    • Set objectives and KPI’s to track the success of transformation initiatives
    • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement
  • Management and oversight of North American Treasury operations
  • Cash management and forecasting to ensure sufficient liquidity is available for North American legal entities to meet their short and long-term financial obligations including daily positioning for all North American operating accounts.
  • Working closely with ALM and Investments to manage liquidity and support the business strategy and maximum investment opportunities.
  • Establish procedures, controls and policies to safeguard cash and minimize the risk of fraud
  • Lead the operations and execution of complex global transaction flows to support tax, capital management and others, ensuring bank facility limits are adhered to/in place, optimize cash flow and timely settlement
  • Responsible for North American payment hub operations and all banking transactions processed by the payment hub or adjunct to it including EFT, ACH, wires, deposits, cheques etc. ensuring successfully daily processing and settlement
  • Manage production and operational issues escalated to Treasury related to payment, cash management and escheatment applications and business processes
  • Oversight of User Logical Access management related to Treasury owned applications and North American bank portals
  • Oversees the US unclaimed property program and manages the regulatory filings for stale dated cheques (escheatment) for 26 US insurance entities ensuring regulatory compliance for all states. Signatory for state filings
  • US lockbox oversight
  • Management of US compliance activities including S-Ox program sign off, US Audit support when required and US based business continuity.
  • Support other business process activities and initiatives as required across the broader Treasury team including addressing the impact of acquisitions or divestitures
  • Experienced people leader with capabilities to foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement and train staff to adopt to new processes, technologies and ways of working

What you'll need to succeed:

  • University degree or equivalent and a post-degree, professional designation (e.g. accounting) or MBA
  • Ten years or more treasury/finance related experience
  • Business transformation, change management and project management experience (Lean, Six Sigma, or Agile)
  • Deep knowledge of treasury operations, cash management, controls and payments
  • In depth knowledge of banking cash management products and services in North America
  • Familiarity with complex financial concepts
  • Solid understanding of treasury technology, banking processes
  • Ability to lead change management in banking processes and technology with measurable results.
  • Strong organizational and decision making skills
  • Superior leadership skills including people management exhibited through previous team management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and handle conflicting priorities in a team based environment

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
