NORWEST CO-OP COMMUNITY HEALTH POSTING
POSITION: Indigenous Social Worker, 1.0 EFT (Permanent)
PROGRAM: Primary Care
RESPONSIBLE TO: Chronic Disease Coordinator
STATUS: POSITION SUMMARY:
The Indigenous Social Worker will work with community partners as a team to offer the best quality service to the residents of Inkster. The social worker will actively encourage community involvement through community development initiatives. Working closely with other NorWest programs, the social worker will support community resource centre initiatives and programming, and be a source for culturally appropriate resources. The social worker will provide counselling to both men and women, and youth, ages 12 and up, through referrals from agencies and those self-referred.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in social work
- We encourage applicants to self-identify as Indigenous
- 3-4 years counselling experience
- Minimum 1-year experience working with community development and community education.
- Knowledge of community resources and community development principles and practices.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Empathetic, non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to work well within an interdisciplinary team in a variety of settings
- Knowledge and experience with diverse cultures and economic backgrounds.
- Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous populations and knowledge of culturally appropriate resources.
- Ability to speak an Indigenous language considered an asset
- Connections/networking with Indigenous community (ex. access to elders)
- Experience with traditional indigenous cultural ceremonies
- Ability to lead/instruct traditional Indigenous cultural practices
- Skills in leadership development and group facilitation
- Ability to work some evenings and or Saturdays.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required
- Criminal records and child abuse registry checks required
- Access to a vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Records Check required
- Employment contingent on security clearance from correctional facilities
Salary: $35.88 to $46.82 (as per MAHCP contract)
