Description
The City of Toronto has been selected as one of 16 cities across three countries to host the FIFA World Cup 26™ in 2026. Six of the tournament's 104 matches will occur in Toronto, with various other competition-related activities occurring throughout the city and extending to other municipalities from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Sunnybrook will lead the development and implementation of an integrated and coordinated Medical Plan, and be responsible for the overall management, direction, and provision of medical services at the tournament and associated events. Sunnybrook will also lead the health emergency management strategy for the tournament.
Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Preparedness, the Medical Manager coordinates and oversees the delivery of medical services and medical and emergency response plans for the tournament and associated events. The Medical Manager plays a key leadership role, and is responsible for managing human and project resources; building a high-performing project team; promoting interprofessional collaboration; influencing and orchestrating high-impact planning; and promoting equity, engagement, accessibility and inclusion in all health and medical planning streams and working environments.
The Medical Manager is supported by a full-time Medical Director and a project team of up to 3.0 FTE. The successful candidate will be fully dedicated to the FIFA World Cup 26™ Toronto Health and Medical Planning Team until the conclusion of the event (~August 2026).
Summary of Duties
- Co-leads (with the Medical Director) the Integrated Health and Medical Planning Table for Ontario.
- Leads or co-leads functional working groups under the purview of the Integrated Health and Medical Planning Table.
- Supervises the Health & Medical Project Team.
- Leads development of the emergency management strategy and priority initiatives for the Integrated Health and Medical Planning Table (ex., mass casualty incident plan, hospital-based family reunification plan, etc.).
- Coordinates the operational Medical Plan for the tournament and associated events.
- Contributes and provides consultation towards other host city plans and areas of planning.
- Prepares after-action and post-tournament reviews and reports.
- Works collaboratively with diverse leaders, organizations, and stakeholder groups across the healthcare system to facilitate planning.
- Promotes an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, diverse, and inclusive work and team environment, consistent with Sunnybrook’s Anti-Racism Policy and equity and social accountability strategy.
Qualifications and Skills
- Health-related degree required. Master’s degree is an asset.
- Clinical background is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience is required.
- Experience in coordinating medical services at sports/mass gathering events is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to implement and manage large-scale projects involving interdisciplinary stakeholders required.
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, team building, and mentorship skills.
- Strong project management skills.
- Strong critical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Expert understanding of the Ontario healthcare system.
- Good understanding of the principles of emergency management and incident management in Ontario.
- Proven ability to achieve goals by building strong relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and address multiple competing priorities.
