Assistant Head Nurse

The Assistant Head Nurse coordinates and supervises care delivery, clinical guidance and the development of staff in a resource effective manner. Assistant head nurse is responsible for ensuring that quality standards of care is provided. The Assistant Head Nurse reports directly to the unit manager. The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for: Assisting in the planning, developing, implementing, evaluation and maintenance of progressive and comprehensive programs/policies and procedures to ensure quality standard of care for patients. Provides clinical supervision, education and development of staff, evaluating day to day delivery and documentation of care. Coordinates the activities of functional center personnel, support personnel, external agencies, volunteers and students as appropriate. Determines staff assignments and schedules. Provides direct patient care as required. Conducts or helps facilitates the completion of department-based orientation programs and research activities. Represents the clinical care area(s) on committees as required. Promotes an effective professional relationship within the multidisciplinary team. Acts as a liaison and resource contact for patients, families, staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team and external agencies. Provides feedback to unit manager regarding staff performance/developmental/clinical skills. Ensures the cost effective and cost-efficient use of resources. Other Duties as required.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Requires 3 years recent related clinical experience in Maternal Child and Pediatrics. Previous supervisory experience in a clinical setting.

BSCN. Demonstrated interpersonal, leadership, planning, problem solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills. Demonstrated ability to make decisions in an interdisciplinary, complex environment.
