Description
The Unit Clerk is responsible for patient and family care on an acute surgical unit as directed by the Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. Unit 22 provides care to ophthalmology, otolaryngology and short stay surgery patients in a fast paced, rapid turnover and high-volume environment. The role of the Unit Clerk is crucial on this high-volume unit and will require strong communication skills, critical thinking skills, accuracy and multitasking. The incumbent activities include managing telephone calls, directing patients and other health professionals, coordinating admissions, discharges, transfers, diagnostic tests, appointment bookings and liaison with admitting and surgeon offices. The successful candidate will also need to physically stand and walk for periods of time to conduct hand hygiene audits, ready patient care spaces, and track equipment as well as assist in transporting/escorting patients. As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Previous experience and related education may be considered. Minimum of one year experience as a unit clerk and ambulatory unit clerk in an ophthalmology and otolaryngology surgical setting. Experience in an outpatient clinic setting. Demonstrated proficiency of the English language, both written and verbal, is required. Must have excellent communication skills as there is a high degree of interaction with patients and providers and a variety of disciplines at all levels of the organization. Strong computer skills required: including proficiency in Netcare, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, Connect Care, Schregistrar required. Accurate typing with a minimum speed of 50 wpm is required. Medical Terminology certificate required. Adaptable and team-oriented with a strong customer service focus. Ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic environment, including working under pressure, adapting and responding to changing priorities and meeting deadlines. Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team. Proven reliability and dependability. Must be physically able to carry out all duties of the position.
