Job Summary

The Team
The Stand Management Team is a small, agile group of eight professionals in the Ministry of Forests, working on exciting projects that shape silviculture policies across the province. As an established team, they’re making a real impact on how forests are cared for in B.C. The Role
As the Provincial Silviculture Specialist in the Harvest and Silviculture Practices Team, you'll lead projects that address important silviculture issues across the province, from planning project goals to developing key deliverables. You'll review forestry laws and regulations to assess their impact on forest practices and work closely with teams across the province to gather input and find solutions that align with forest management goals. A big part of the role involves building strong relationships with partners inside and outside the Ministry to support provincial silviculture objectives.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) as a Registered Professional Forester. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to FPBC within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or Natural Resource Management and five (5) years of progressive and directly *related forestry experience; or,
  • Master’s degree in forestry or Natural Resource Management and three (3) years of progressive and directly *related forestry experience; or,
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education, i.e., Technical Diploma in Forestry or Natural Resource Management, completion of pupil program and seven (7) years of progressive and directly *related experience.

Directly *related experience must include at least one year in each of the following:

  • Experience in delivering operational silviculture activities.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, or review of stocking standards.
  • Experience in preparing and providing clear, concise, and complete oral and written information of a complex and technical nature and delivering training to diverse groups.
  • Experience in contract management.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience in the design and implementation of complex silvicultural systems.
  • Experience leading or designing continuing education sessions.
  • Experience identifying, gathering, interpreting, and analyzing scientific or technical information to verify and/or reach conclusions and provide advice and/or recommendations.
  • Experience in First Nations’ engagement.

Provisos /Willingness statement(s)

  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).
  • Must be willing and able to travel away from home and stay overnight on a regular basis.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 (two) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above, subject to operational considerations.
