The Director of UI Development is a hybrid role, based out of Toronto, that reports directly to the Head, Capital Markets Architecture Enablement. This person will translates creative software design concepts and ideas into reality using front end technology. They will act as a bridge between the presentation layer and the backend layer.

We are seeking someone who understands requirements, designs interactive and intuitive interface programs that enhance the customer/user experience. This person is comfortable being hands-on, when needed, to apply and understand in-depth programming languages, frameworks and practices. This will be focused around interaction design/User Centred Design (UCD) to ensures consistent application of design system standards.

  • Collaborates with business and IT to identify the business need for the user interface that needs to be created and ensures alignment with brand and design standards and guidelines.

  • Uses responsive web designs to create applications that automatically match multiple screen sizes/devices.

  • Conducts usability testing to identify and fix UI issues and collects insights from target users

  • Improves the user experience by making it easy for users to navigate different digital properties and interfaces.

  • Supports the design and front-end development of new features and functionality across digital channels.

  • Creates storyboards to conceptualise designs and applies an in depth knowledge of user interface development technology stack and frameworks.

  • Writes documentation around the user interface to ensure the decisions for designs/configurations are documented.

  • Fosters a culture aligned to BMO purpose, values and strategy and role models BMO values and behaviours in all that they do.

  • Builds interdependent teams that collaborate across functional and operating groups to create the highest value for all stakeholders.

  • Attracts, retains, and enables the career development of top talent.

  • Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a senior specialist resource across BMO.

  • Anticipates trends and responds by implementing appropriate changes.

Qualifications:

  • Typically 7+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Seasoned expert with extensive industry knowledge.

  • Technical leader viewed as a thought leader for innovation.

  • 7+ years of professional experience with the following technologies: ReactJS, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3/SASS, Git, Material (MUI), NodeJS/NPM/Yarn, TypeScript, API (REST, GraphQL), Redux (RTK, Saga), NextJS and OpenFin

Lead, manage, and hold accountable a team of UI developers, including:

  • Holding check-ins, quarterly conversations, and annual reviews.

  • Checking in on metrics and feedback.

  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship.

  • Guide best practices and processes within the UI discipline.

  • Work with design to build design systems to act as a toolbox for the design process, leaning more toward blocks and elements than full-page templates.

  • Extend existing design systems for support clients and ongoing sites.

  • Work seamlessly with our back-end developers and the rest of the development team on projects of all sizes & scopes.

  • Translate design mockups into flexible HTML and CSS to be used in the completed project.

  • Maintain current skills and industry best-practices.

  • Be accountable for tasks, track time, and keep team members in the loop

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with both teams and clients

Salary:

$113,900.00 - $211,800.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
