Description
We are seeking a Managing Director to lead our Hedge Fund and Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) teams. The MD will be responsible for creating and executing the strategy to deliver target returns & top quartile performance for the Hedge Funds and Insurance Linked Securities business. The incumbent will lead and develop the team and ensure collaboration across Capital Markets and the Total Fund. This role requires deep expertise in investment management, solid market knowledge of fund strategies and portfolio construction to drive success through changing and evolving market environments, and a strong ability to steer relationships and opportunities to benefit Capital Markets and the Fund.
Who you’ll work with
You will lead the Hedge Fund and ILS business, which consists of 9 investment professionals, based in Toronto and London, and is responsible for investing in a global portfolio of hedge fund and ILS exposures that provide differentiated capabilities across asset classes, geographies, and investment strategies.
Your experienced team follows a rigorous and disciplined selection criteria which places strong emphasis on the manager’s track record, investment process, firm culture, and key alignment across our core values. In addition, the team is focused on defining and measuring common alternative risk factors and ensuring an equitable sharing of economics between external managers and the Hedge Fund/ILS portfolio. We view external managers as strategic partners and look to build mutually beneficial relationships over a long-term horizon.
As part of a dynamic work environment, every day you will partner with the Capital Markets Leadership team and engage with investment professionals across the Fund. The Capital Markets Leadership team is responsible for the overall portfolio construction and risk management across all activities within the CM.
What you’ll doBuild a long-term strategy for the team required to deliver on the Hedge Fund and Insurance Linked Securities business strategies
Provide overall leadership and direction to direct reports including progress on strategic initiatives, investment performance, risk management and compliance with policy and guidelines.
Focus on managing complexity and costs of investing in external managers to ensure a material net return.
Build and nurture a diverse, global, integrated team based across London, Toronto. Lead, direct, inspire and influence employees.
Share innovative ideas for portfolio management to optimize resources allocation to maximize success globally
Represent both internally and externally as the department’s subject matter expert for Ontario Teacher’s
As part of Capital Markets senior leadership team, contribute to the team’s overall resource allocation and portfolio construction
Effectively communicate within a complex global matrix that requires information flow up, down and across the organisation. This will include interaction with the Plan’s CIOs and other key global senior leaders to execute on Teachers’ Forward strategy.
Establish risk management information requirements for the HF/ILS portfolio
Establish technology requirements for timely reporting
Participate in various fund-wide committees and projects
At least 12+ years in fund investing or other relevant experience
Bachelor’s degree, graduate degree in related field
Strong academic background, with a focus on financial designation (i.e. MBA, CFA)
Experience with hedge fund investing
Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (both oral and written)
Strong team player and willingness to coach, develop and/or lead other team members
Excellent representative of OTPP given the high profile of the external managers team with the broader investments community
An ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, manage projects and thrive in a high-performance team environment
Ability to travel frequently as required
Experience with investing internationally and leading internationally and culturally diverse teams
Broad investment product knowledge
Deep strategy knowledge: understanding drivers of fund returns
Comfort in making material decisions in uncertainty
Agility and creativity in strategic deployment to allow for changing market and fund structure conditions
Performance Driven: Requires a discipline on clear quantitative and qualitative success measures, monitoring results over an appropriate time horizon; with clear targets for risk and performance management
Demonstrated ability to lead a global team to determine new opportunities
Core interest and ability to help develop best practices of HF/ILS team
