We are seeking a self-motivated, forward-thinking Engineer who is obsessed with delivering value to our customers and is excited to see the successful implementation of the products you deliver delight our customers.
As an Engineer in our US segment (John Hancock) technology team, you will be contributing as a member of an agile squad to develop and deliver transformative and impactful digital solutions to John Hancock customers in new and exciting ways, working directly with the Technical Product Partner, other Engineers and various customers. The right candidate will also be somebody who is motivated to get it done together, loves to continually learn and builds software using modern technologies and design.
What Work Would I Be Doing?
- Owning and responsible for building, execution and deploying cloud-native applications
- Working with the latest tech stack including Angular, React, .Net, JavaScript on the latest platforms Azure Kubernetes Services, Application Service Environments using DevOps / GitOps
- Builds, codes, tests, maintain high quality software ensuring that the proper quality gates are passed (including test coverage, security validation) using the appropriate DevSecOps tools
- Ability to translate Insurance buying requirements into software requirements. Validate possible solutions against architectural guardrails
- Create diagrams and documentation to support and articulate design solutions
- Collaborating with other engineers through pair-programming and knowledge transfer sessions
- Expect coaching and mentoring from lead engineers who have a passion for technology
Must Have:
5+ years Full-Stack Engineer experience
Experience translating user requirements into software requirements
Ability to build moderately complex code to specifications and standards
SQL experience
Good interpersonal skills to convey issues and work to both technology and business customers
Experience with technologies such as: C#, .NET, JSON, XML is a must.
Experience working with modern software architectures and API-focused development and scripting languages
Experience working in an agile and DevSecOps environment
Familiarity with agile and DevOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new features
Understanding of software development lifecycle
Prioritizes efficient code production by using open-source frameworks and patterns
Demonstrates all core skills, and good interpersonal skills for the role
Good working and background knowledge of area of practice
Participates in functional demos applying new tech; designs own control structures
Writes clear, readable and maintainable code, takes ownership of the quality and usability of code
Understands how to find and reuse patterns and platforms in the Manulife ecosystem and the broader community •
Experience with technologies such as: React, React Native, Node, Angular, JQuery
Experience with technologies such as: JavaScript, Python, Scala or Java
Hands-on RDBMS experience (data modeling, analysis, programming, stored procedures)
Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to coach, participate in code reviews, share skills and methods
Constantly learns from both success and failure
Good organizational and problem-solving abilities that enable you to manage through creative abrasion
Good verbal and written communication; effectively articulates technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes
Able to achieve most tasks using own judgement
Can lead smaller groups where required
Good analytical skills, copes with complex situations through deliberate analysis and planning

Primary Location
Working Arrangement
Salary range is expected to be between
$75,880.00 CAD - $140,920.00 CADIf you are applying for this role outside of the primary location, please contact recruitment@manulife.com for the salary range for your location. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
