The Information Systems and Technology (IST) department at the University of Waterloo provides information systems, technology, and services in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative needs across campus. Within IST, the Information Systems group works with campus partners to develop, implement, and support information systems to meet the needs of the University. The Information Systems Specialist (Odyssey Developer) will report to the Manager, Systems Development and AI Technologies, and is responsible for ongoing development and maintenance of an enterprise-critical customer relationship management suite (Odyssey). The Odyssey tool set facilitates managing and disseminating data pertaining to students, staff, exams, admissions, and advising. Odyssey's development is spearheaded by the Computer Science Computing Facility (CSCF) within the School of Computer Science. This role will therefore be tightly integrated with CSCF’s development team and will collaborate proactively to enrich and expand the functionality of this critical tool set.

Responsibilities

As a part of a team the candidate will:

  • Work collaboratively with the team to implement creative solutions to difficult problems
  • Use best judgement and best practices in solving problems
  • Always interact with the team in a positive and constructive manner
  • Participate in discussions and planning sessions to help steer the Odyssey project
  • Strive to improve the platform on a day-to-day basis, with particular focus on improving and enhancing the Odyssey tool for students, staff and faculty
  • Focus on continuous improvement, both oneself and the team, by staying current in the latest technology trends, providing feedback and identifying new ways to work more effectively
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, and work experience in a similar technical service-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated experience in taking an entrepreneurial approach and adopting a continuous improvement mindset
  • Excellent ability to work on a team
  • Must have a good of understanding of software development best practices and employ them in everyday tasks
  • Proven ability to code and maintain complex web applications
  • Thorough understanding of responsive design frameworks and patterns
  • Understanding of accessibility best practices as they apply to the web
  • Expert in:
    • SQL databases, including writing advanced queries and triggers, with a knowledge of complex relational datamodeling
    • Modern programming languages (Python and Scala currently in use)
    • Git source control with experience in common DevOps practices
    • Web development
