Job Summary

The Team
The Archaeology Branch: Disaster Response and Recovery Team is dedicated to supporting communities affected by climate-related emergencies. This involves managing and issuing permits under the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA). This 12-member team includes a diverse mix of Permitting and Inventory Archaeologists, GIS Specialists, administrative and Indigenous Relations officers, all working together to ensure effective climate emergency response and recovery while promoting innovation and respecting cultural heritage. The Role
As an Inventory Archaeologist, you'll play a crucial role in maintaining the Provincial Heritage Register by reviewing site record submissions, ensuring accuracy, and supporting compliance and enforcement investigations. Your work directly impacts community recovery efforts and infrastructure rebuilding, while contributing to the province’s archaeological knowledge through innovative permit approaches and new field methods. This position offers the exciting opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated team, apply your expertise to provincial decision-making, and drive progress in archaeological practices.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • BA or BSc or higher in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology, OR
  • An equivalent combination of post-graduate training and experience* may be considered.

*Experience:

  • Minimum eighteen (18) months’ experience in professional archaeological resource management, specifically professional field work, site recording, and/or producing reports, site forms, and/or site maps.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • A related master’s degree or Doctorate.
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience in professional archaeological resource management.
  • One (1) or more years’ experience in professional archaeological resource management in British Columbia (as part of the minimum eighteen (18) months).
  • Experience using and/or designing complex spreadsheets (e.g., Excel), relational databases, and/or geographic information system (GIS) software.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and partners in a natural resource management or cultural resource management context.
  • Candidates who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until 03/28/2025. This position may be extended or become permanent.
An eligibility list may be established for future temporary and/or permanent opportunities.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
