Job Summary

The Team
The BC Wildfire Service is the Province of BC’s leading emergency response organization, where you'll be part of the Cariboo Fire Centre's established team of around 50 dedicated full-time staff. The Prevention Specialist will collaborate directly with five key team members, as well as operational staff, auxiliary crews, and the prevention group, making a significant impact on wildfire management. Working closely with forest consultants and a diverse range of partners, including local, provincial, and international governments and Indigenous organizations, you’ll play a vital role in advancing the Four Pillars of Emergency Management, particularly in prevention and mitigation.

The Role
The Prevention Specialist will lead key projects within the Fire Centre, support Senior Wildfire Officers in applying legislation, and play a crucial part in wildfire prevention. You'll deliver training, refine prevention plans, and implement strategies to reduce human-caused fires. As a wildfire expert, you’ll build strong partnerships to enhance risk reduction efforts, offering a unique opportunity to shape provincial policies and protect community safety.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management or equivalent knowledge, plus one (1) year recent related experience (gained within the last 3 years); OR
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus three (3) years recent related experience (gained within the last 5 years); OR
  • Grade 12 plus five (5) years recent related experience (gained within the last 7 years) or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training; AND
    • Related experience is defined as operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management
  • Valid class 5 driver licence


Preference statement(s)

  • Preference may be given to candidates who are registered or immediately eligible to register as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Forest Professionals BC

Provisos /Willingness statement(s)

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To be assigned or participate to Incident Command System positions and Incident Management Teams as required.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
