Job Summary

The Team
The Archaeology Branch Disaster Response and Recovery Team is a dedicated group of twelve professionals, including Permitting and Inventory Archaeologists, GIS Specialists, and Indigenous Relations Officers. Together, they facilitate disaster response and recovery efforts in collaboration with provincial ministries, local municipalities, First Nations, and residents, ensuring archaeological sites are protected and community needs are met. The team values diversity, inclusivity, and innovation, and is committed to upholding the responsibilities outlined in the Heritage Conservation Act.

The Role
As a Senior Permitting Archaeologist, you will provide expert advice to Management and Executive, support the archaeological community, local governments, industry, and First Nations in the administration of Heritage Conservation Act permits, and supervise staff while managing complex files. You will play a key role in navigating controversial or politically sensitive issues related to archaeological resource management. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful recovery and rebuild efforts across the province, promote archaeological innovation, and make a lasting impact on communities.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelors of Arts or Science in Archaeology, OR
• Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology, OR
• An equivalent combination of education and/or training and related experience* may be considered.

*Related experience must include the following:
• Minimum four (4) years’ senior level experience in archaeological resource management, specifically a combination of fieldwork, reporting, and liaison with Indigenous organizations and regulatory bodies.
• Experience interpreting and applying archaeological and cultural resource management legislation and/or policy.
• Experience leading others.
• Experience providing briefings and recommendations to senior management.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
• Master’s degree (or higher) in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology, or a related field and *related experience
• Minimum five (5) years’ experience in archaeological resource management, specifically a combination of fieldwork, reporting, and liaison with Indigenous organizations and regulatory bodies.
• Who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).
• Specialized or advanced experience with archeology, archeological resource management and British Columbia prehistory.
• Three (3) or more years’ experience supervising, leading, coaching, and/or mentoring staff in a supportive manner.
• Three (3) or more years' experience in Indigenous consultation and engagement processes on archaeological management issues.

Currently there is one (1) temporary opportunity available until October 24, 2025. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position can be based in a Natural Resource Sector office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
