Purpose

Our Red Chris operation is now recruiting for the position of Superintendent - TIA Construction with a competitive base salary between $144,500.00 - $170,000.00 dependant on experience, skills, and qualifications, with an additional short term incentive of 20%.The Construction Superintendent is responsible for all matters related to construction execution in the Tailings Impoundment Area (TIA) including annual construction campaigns to raise two earthfill tailings dams. They ensure all work is carried out in a structured manner and that the work meets project objectives for quality, cost & schedule compliance, and safety.

Essential Duties

Health, Safety, and Security

  • Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe and healthy working environment:
  • Implement of the Newmont Incident Management Procedure including appropriate incident notification, investigation, actions, and signoff within the prescribed timelines. Lead incident investigations as required by the standard.
  • Ensure compliance with Newmont’s Fatality Risk Management program; coach supervisors in the administration of the program.
  • Ensure compliance with the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code (HSRC) for Mines in British Columbia for Permitting, Reclamation and Closure (10.1 to 10.6)
  • Review and communicate operational traffic management plans.

Leadership, People & Development

  • Manage a team of construction management professionals including engineers, project controllers, health & safety, quality control and survey personnel in completion of the planned works
  • Develop, mentor and coach a construction team for a high standard of excellence
  • Provide input in planning of optimal organizational structure
  • Stay current in own professional development and industry training as required

Essential duties continued

Technical

  • Demonstrate excellent in anticipating challenges and risks with potential to impact project or business goals and managing those risks effectively.
  • Lead the TIA Construction Team in the following disciplines: civil design, execution planning, survey, materials laboratory testing, access and haul road construction and maintenance, and operational dam construction planning and scheduling;
  • Lead the TIA Construction Team to manage, plan, construct, and operate the site’s tailings facility in accordance with the design and performance objectives set by the Engineer of Record;
  • Continuously seek out opportunities to improve / optimise the works program;
  • Proactively communicate with other departments on site, including equipment maintenance, site services, environmental, social, and health and safety teams;
  • Be accountable and fully responsible for all daily tailings construction management activities including those of on-site business partner(s);
  • Lead the Quality Management System during the dam construction seasons to ensure construction specification compliance per designs;
  • Assisting in the development of investment review papers, gate reports, and project execution plans for dam construction related activities;
  • Support weekly and monthly reporting including earned value reports, accruals, activity summaries, and risk reports;
  • Contribute to long range planning including developing the 3-month rolling plan and 5-year construction and infrastructure plan;
  • Assisting in emergency preparedness and response plans (EPRP) field testing; and
Training & Experience
  • Ability to make considered decisions under conditions of uncertainty;
  • A professional degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field;
  • 10-15 years experience in earthworks construction with demonstrated success in leadership positions. Experience in tailings dam construction and cyclone sand dam construction preferred.
  • Demonstrated success implementing a quality management program specific to earthworks construction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to synthesize complex problems and communicate regarding uncertainty and risk.
  • Demonstrated success acting as an operational leader in tailings impoundment management.
  • Proven capability in tailings and water management facility construction, operation, regulatory compliance, and adherence to codes.
