Job Summary

The Team
Join the established Inventory Analysis and Reporting team, where you will be part of a diverse group of professionals dedicated to supporting the stewardship and management of natural resources. Our team plays a crucial role in providing forest analysis and inventory information to meet the critical information needs of the Ministry and the natural resource sector. You will collaborate with a wide range of experts, including inventory ground sampling teams, timber supply review analysts, ecologists, biometricians, and other Ministry scientists, to improve the information that supports natural resource management decisions. The Role
The Site Productivity Forester leads the development of provincial site productivity estimates and associated applications and provides expert advice and client support to users of these products. This role involves maintaining critical products like the provincial site productivity layer and the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification site series (SIBEC) database, ensuring that these tools are used effectively for managing British Columbia’s natural resources. You will engage proactively with scientific and policy experts across various branches and ministries, conduct independent data analysis, and represent the ministry in partner and stakeholder meetings. Branch Overview
The primary responsibility of the Ministry’s Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch (FAIB) is to provide forest analysis and inventory information to assist in meeting the Resource Stewardship Division's stewardship mandate, the Chief Forester's statutory responsibilities, and critical information needs of the Ministry and the natural resource sector. The Branch's two key programs (Forest Analysis and Forest Inventory) provide critical forest analysis, inventory data, strategic direction, and policy support to enable sustainable forest resource management and the determination of allowable annual cut for most of the province. The Branch also contributes to informing management and decision making by providing information and analysis that help explore the implications associated with a wide range of current and evolving resource issues and practices.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

  • Master's degree or higher in forestry, and a minimum of 3 years of related experience*; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, and a minimum of 5 years of related experience*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience* may be considered.
  • Registered or immediately eligible** for registration as a professional Forester with the Forest Professionals BC (FPBC).
  • Three years experience with the management, compilation, and analysis of ground sample data including site index data, and decision support tools (e.g., SiteTools, TASS, TIPSY).


**Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Registered Professional Forester in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to the FPBC within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have the FPBC review their qualifications to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.

*Related education / experience includes the following:

  • Degree in a related science field (e.g., Biology or Geography) may be considered together with related experience.
  • Experience with the management, compilation, and analysis of ground sample data including site index data, and decision support tools (e.g., SiteTools).
  • Experience in forest mensuration (e.g., forest inventory, biometrics, sampling, tree measurement, field sample assessment, quantitative data analysis and management).
